We hope to see you on Wednesday, March 15th. Read below for more details.
5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1… ALL SAILORS CLEAR TO REGISTER!
Dear Friends of PYC Jr. Sailing,
With registration open, the countdown to Summer 2017 has officially begun. The plan is keep you informed about the latest Junior Sailing Program (JSP) happenings through this monthly newsletter posted to the Sailing Blog.
The sailing program is fortunate to have an experienced management team at the helm. Bart Weisenfluh, the Jr. Sailing Program Officer, is returning for his third season as our visionary and leader. Bart (email@example.com) is a great resource if you would like to speak to someone about the program from a parent’s perspective. Bart’s three children participate in junior sailing and his wife, Heather, participates in women’s sailing. I am returning, also for my third season, as the Jr. Sailing Program Director. During the “off season” I teach English and coach alpine skiing at Kennebunk High School. It’s been a fun surprise to see many PYC junior sailors on the mountain. I am happy to announce that Morgan Casey, a member of last summer’s sailing staff, has come onboard as the Jr. Sailing Assistant Director. Morgan is a skilled sailing coach, launch driver, race officer and an overall asset to PYC. She also brings invaluable boat maintenance skills to the job. She is holding down the fort at PYC this winter, attending to the dinghy fleet and helping with registration. Morgan is taking over the JSP direct line (207-899-2864). Give her a call; she looks forward to talking with you!
If you’re a returning JSP family, you might notice that we’ve updated the course offerings in order to bring you the best possible programming in summer 2017. The updated course titles are outlined below, and full class descriptions are posted on our webpage. Peanuts is now called Minnows; Prams is now called Beginner; and Opti Combined is now called Intermediate. There is one 420 Race course for both green fleet and championship fleet racers; and there is one Adventure course that utilizes both the 420s dinghies and J/24 keelboats. The programming is offered in two week sessions. We encourage sailors to consider registering for multiple sessions to maximize your time on the water during Maine’s fleeting summer season. The JSP prices have increased in order to keep up with the times and demands of funding a premiere program. The separate PJYC membership fee has been removed.
You are all invited to attend the third annual Mid-Winter Social on February 15th from 5:30 to 8pm at PYC. There will be information tables for the different courses so that parents can find the best fit for their children. If you would like to volunteer to work a table and speak to prospective sailors, please contact Jen Wahlig (firstname.lastname@example.org). Our partners at Rippleffect and Tall Ships Portland will also have information tables. There will be a youth raffle with PYC giveaways, and adult beverages supplied by Rising Tide Brewing Co. Mark the date!
