Again, this message is being emailed to those members who have an email address listed in the 2007 roster, and mailed to those who only have a mailing address. To receive communication via email, please send us your current email address.
Activities at the club continue, specifically involved with planning for the upcoming season. As mentioned, the club is open five days a week from 9 am to 5 pm weather permitting. Thank you to our bookkeeper, Carol McEwen for providing the extra time during the off season. With the help of Carol, we are getting a lot done in preparation for commissioning.
A search committee is being formed under the “temporary” leadership of Maya Cohen. Board members on this committee include Maya, Kristin King, and Bill Newberry. The committee has solicited additional non-board members to participate. This expanded committee will then select a “leader” for the committee, and then will update the club manager’s duties, review applicants, conduct the interviews and finalize selection process procedures.
We have placed the club manager position on several websites. If you have any suggestions, or are aware of anyone who may be interested in the club manager’s position, please email your thoughts to Maya, at 741-2734. We already have several excellent applicants.
The now “annual” event was held in January with a great turnout. Again, thanks to head chef Phil Sargent, supervised by his wife Cindy and ably assisted by kitchen help MaryAnn McLean. Phil’s recipe of chile and chowda again received rave reviews. The event was well attended with over 65 club members despite a typical Maine evening of snow and ice.
The roofs over the dining room, ladies / men’s rooms, and furnace area have been installed. Fortunately there was very little rot in the roof decking or adjacent walls. The sliding door in the Captains room is being replaced, and the new decks over the roofs will go back as soon as the weather “breaks”. Fortunately, there was very little rot in the roof decking or adjacent walls. The patio area will also begin as soon as we can see the ground….when? With this winter we hope it will be before July.
The clubhouse, grounds, floats, pier and steward sheds are in excellent shape, thanks to the planning of the Finance committee, the money’s that have been approved by the membership for capital improvement, and the very aggressive management of their maintenance by the house and grounds, and waterfront committees. We are ready for the 2008 season.
Club Employees
Our dining room chef, Shawn Lewis, and water front steward Bob Putnam are returning for another year. We are very pleased with the job that both did in 2007, and we look forward to another great season. Bob has helped out during the winter months, with maintenance of our facilities and other duties in support of winter events. Thanks Bob for your fine continued support over the winter season.
Unfortunately, Molly White will not be returning to the head the junior program this year. However, the jr program committee which remains in tact from last year is very active under its new board member Skip Yale. The committee is also being assisted by Meg Coon, last year’s jr program board member and is on track for putting together another great season. This program is recognized throughout New England as one of the best, and has produced some world class sailors.
Thank you Skip for accepting the vacant board position, and to Meg for her continued support. We look forward to working with both of you.
Committees
The planning for the upcoming season is well underway with committees meeting regularly at the club. The following is a brief description of those committees. I encourage you to join one of the committees, or at least communicate your thoughts and ideas. It is your club, and again we want to continue to meet your expectations.
Budget – The members of this committee develop the annual budget for approval by the board and membership. Most of their work takes place just before the end of the fiscal year (August, September and October), but are active in reviewing operations during the year. Bill Oliver 781-3196).
Cruising – The cruisers have been doing their thing continuously for many years. I don’t know the exact number, but there is a “cruising pennant” in the clubhouse that dates from 1913. The summer cruising activities are developed / planned for during the offseason, including shakedown, annual two week, one week kid friendly and mini cruises. Other cruising oriented activities are included for sailing and power boating trips – David Potts(829-4069)
Entertainment – This is a very active and fun committee that provides for the planning and conduct of many social events that are held throughout the year, i.e. pot lucks, cannonball, commodore’s cocktail party, July 4th picnic, decommissioning, children’s Christmas Party, the New Year’s day event and other events club events – Mary Smith (797-9310)
Food & Beverage – Our dining room is responsible to the membership for providing quality food and beverage service. Such things as menus, hours of operation, type of service, and other specific activities associated with our fine dining service are put together by this committee. – Kristen King (829-3830)
House & Grounds – Our club house, steward’s shed and grounds are in great shape during the four seasons. This committee ensures that we focus our resources both short and long term on keeping our fiscal plant functioning and beautiful. – Erik Greven (878-3740)
Decorating Committee – This committee has been working on the appearance of the clubhouse, including decorations, furnishings, soundproofing of the great room, and other activities that keep our clubhouse looking great. A good part of the money to support their projects is generated from the activities such as the profits from the cookbook that was published last year. (I think that we still have some left for sale…last chance!) – Hope Bramhall
Junior Program – This program has developed into a fine training and racing program that is recognized throughout New England. We’ve also had members and graduates compete successfully at the national level which reflects on the fine skills that are developed through this program. This committee has been instrumental in continually improving the level of instruction, and ensuring that resources allocated are spent effectively in keeping our kids competitive – Skip Yale
Membership – The membership remains full at 300 adult members. We currently have a waiting list of 20 plus applicants, and receive a couple of new applicants each month. (Typically we have 15 to 20 resignations each month. The committee attempts to determine the reason for the resignation, and presents those to the board to ensure that we may be addressing any club related issues.)
There is a specific selection process that is adhered to. This committee is tasked with communicating with prospective members, presenting applications to the board and ensuring that the membership has the opportunity to provide comments prior to approval. A large part of their duties is to ensure that those joining the club are welcomed, and get up to speed on how the club operates. – Maya Cohen (741-2734)
Education Committee – This is a relatively new committee that further supports the “education” part of our mission statement by providing interesting informational and educational seminars. There have been donations to this program that assist in the cost of bringing in quality speakers. This has been an exciting addition to the activities of the club. – Maya Cohen (741-2734)
Race & Monhegan– We have arguably the most active race community in Maine at PYC. We host four annual regattas and hold weeknight racing on Tuesday through Thursday from Memorial Day until mid September. Our “signature” event is the Monhegan. It is the oldest overnight offshore race in the Gulf of Maine and has been run almost continuously since its founding in 1928 by Hal Moore. This committee is very active in planning for and running these events.-Bill Newberry (893-8244)
Waterfront – Finally, but one of the most important committees is the waterfront committee. This is why we belong to PYC … access to the water. This committee provides the planning for maintaining the dock and floats, tenders, chase boats, and the race committee boats – Tony Jessen – (771-0823)
Finally, I want to thank Ann Blanchard for help with this newsletter and the website. Ann edits this for me and straightens out the grammar and misspellings.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me on my cell (207-450-5658) or email.
Looking forward to seeing you on the water this season. Craig Fillmann, Commodore
